Ever Been To Dragon-Con? Yeah….Exactly

My now husband, but back then, someone I was dating for two months daily for either dinner or lunch, or both most days, confessed he used to “go somewhere” on Fridays before he met me. And, he happened to mention it in a weird way, with tentative and pregnant pauses. It then hit me. NOW the other shoe is dropping. I had been waiting for some freakazoid moment to appear where I realized that the person I was seeing, who seemed so great so far was flawed in some freakazoid way. It had been somewhat easy, up to this point. Oh oh, here it comes…with a big sigh, and a steely resolve to try to be open-minded and not prejudge, because hey, at this point, what do I know, it might be something minor. Maybe he was attending AA meetings. I said nonchalantly, “Oh? Where might that be?”

Dun dun duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun

“D and D”

“Excuse me? D and D?” Long pause…..and in the deep recesses of my mind, back to my childhood, it clicked, where have I heard those two letters together before…where…..”OH! You mean like dungeons and dragons? Ohhhhhhhh.”

Uncomfortable silence.

“You mean like the computer game? You mean like the game people used to play in elementary school? My brother used to play that game in elementary school.” My relieved breath of sigh here.

Uncomfortable silence.

Why was there uncomfortable silence? Computer games are A-Ok, I thought.
“No..um..um…not the computer game, more like role play”

“What…..what do you mean role playing? You mean like actual people sitting there and playing and rolling that 5 or whatever sided die?” (I said this with rapid fire staccato, within 2 seconds and no breaths, with a slightly higher pitched voice)

“Heh, heh, heh….yeah! That’s the one, so you know about it! Except not with a five-sided die but with an octahedren….” and on and on he went, excitedly.

Uncomfortable silence on my end this time…

Mind-dialogue – What the ?! I thought he was a bit nerdy BUT he is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay freaking NERDYYYYYYYY. What did I get myself into…”

I guess it was about 5 minutes I sat there thinking all these thoughts. Oblivious at this point to the fact that he was staring at me and had stopped talking about octahedren dice and dice in general. So my future husband, then someone who I was just dating and still not in the “in”, said, “It’s really a great game. You should come and watch sometime. Maybe you might want to join our campaign.”

Enough said.
