Update On Kitchen – Granite Is In

•October 26, 2009 • Leave a Comment

The granite is in and the backsplash (6 inches) is done.  I have to say there is one section on the right hand side that I’m not happy with but otherwise it looks good.  The problem is the stone we picked out was not all matched exactly and cutting it and fitting the “movement” as my mister likes to call it is hard if they don’t all look exactly alike.  Our pattern was not as simple or as monochromatic.

The doors will go in tomorrow?  Stove tomorrow.  Hardware tomorrow.  Faucet tomorrow?  We are almost there….

Cootie Guard For Kids

•October 25, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Public bathrooms are a nightmare with little toddlers who use the restroom but don’t know not to touch everything, then touch your face and eyes, all unwittingly.  Well now you can fully cover the nasty toilet with a cootie guard.  Great invention.  Below is the blurb on their website.

http://www.cootieguards.com/

What’s a CootieGuard?

CootieGuards provide your child total protection from public toilet seats with a sanitary barrier that guards against wetness and germs while protecting from lower surfaces where children touch. Use CootieGuards to help reduce the stress of potty training, provide support and prevent smaller children from falling through. They’re easy to use, disposable and your hands never have to touch toilet surfaces. Take along CootieGuards in your purse, pocket or backpack. Great for traveling, those trips to the mall or out to a restaurant. Perfect for the family on the go.

  • Total protection from toilet seats
  • Disposable convenience that leaves germs behind
  • Great for potty training
  • Makes trips to restrooms a breeze

I have a thing for clear or glass items.  Acrylic, lucite and glass especially.  My friends know I have 2 glass crystal lamps on our nightstands.

All things clear, I’m a bit obsessed with in a mild way.  My favorite design blog, desire to inspire, posted an artist who makes acrylic things on another level.

He’s made items for Louis Vuitton and Frette stores.  Aaron Thomas, check him out!

Swine Flu

•October 25, 2009 • Leave a Comment

I’ve been trying to get darn flu shots for my bunny and swine flu shots.  The nasal mist spray is available, finally.  However, pamf is terrible at keeping straight what the desk people should say.  I get one desk person telling me it’s only for 6 month olds and younger, which I know is not true.  The next pediatric desk gives me a handout to check all these questions to see if my bunny qualifies and is in a high risk category of 2 – 9 years of age, which he is.  So I call to make an appointment and I literally get a runaround answer that he cannot get the vaccine.  I call my pediatrician’s assistant and I get another nurse who tells me I can.

So bizarre and frustrating.  Monday morning I am calling my pediatrician to get the swine flu talk with him.

Meanwhile, here are some good resources and what I’ve been reading up on.

So my mister posed the question to me.  Do I not want him to be friends with his ex girlfriend from college on facebook?  Do I mind and if so, he won’t do it.  I’m indifferent but I’m not sure either.  At first I’m like, sure whatever.  But it begs the question about the whole facebook relationship and phenomena.  You get back in touch with friends and people you’ve not talked to for years, for decades.  What is the purpose of that?  You say, to get back in touch.  To what means and to what end?  Is it a true sense of getting back into each other’s life or is it just a virtual space to pretend to have a semblance of a relationship, meanwhile you’ll not ever meet, or you may.  You may enter into real relationships and not just a virtual one.  I’m not sure, I’m just writing down the different thoughts and not really made up my mind about it all except I do ponder on it.

I’m not sure what my answer is now.  I guess I’ve been trying to ask my mister the nature of what this would mean.  Does he share what is going on in his life with this ex.  To what extent.  Not sure.  Not sure at all.  Am I insecure about it?  Actually not.  It’s just the larger philosophical question of “what purpose and to what end?”  I guess I would want to know what my mister envisioned.  I most certainly do not know what the ex envisions this facebook relationship means, and what getting back in touch means or entails.  I guess I would want to know that first….

It’s Finally Happened

So it’s finally happened.  Except not to me.  Facebook has officially became the gateway to my husband and one of his ex’s getting back in touch.

Strangely enough, the past men in my life do not seem to wonder about me or want to get back in touch.  I’m not sure if it’s because they pretty much assumed I’m married by now and settled or?  Well, digressing on my own vanities, back to my mister.  His girlfriend in college has pinged him to be a friend on Facebook.  My mister is very trustworthy.  He is very forthright and he never hides anything from me.  To be continued….

Kitchen Remodel Update

Well, cabinets are installed today.  Granite installation tomorrow!  It is super exciting because this is the most traction we’ve had yet!

The only thing is our wall color that we thought was oh so bold is actually a tad boring.  It’s pretty understated.  We thought it was so dramatic and come find out with the new recessed lighting my mister installed himself, the color looks very different compared to natural lighting.

It’s a restoration hardware color that we got mixed at home depot and I have to say, it’s close but not the same.  Not bad though, not bad.

The Lesser of 2 Evils (aka me laughing at my misters discomfort)

•October 23, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Today I saw this young man with a baseball cap on backwards, in a huge truck.  It made me want to ask my mister a ridiculous question.  I said, which would you rather have, our daughter coming home with a blue collar boy with a huge monster truck, cap on backwards, but down to earth OR a preppy white boy who can be a jerk.  Which?  Which?  And my mister is silent for 10 seconds straight.  I could not believe it.  So I said, that hard for ya huh?  Which one?  Of the 2 evils, which one?  Would you rather she bring home someone who is down to earth BUT in a huge monster truck OR a upwardly mobile preppy boy but he was a jerk?  Which?  Of couse it was an unfair question and I said, neither?  Neither?  Then he said, well how about if our little boy brought home a loose girl.  And I said, how would you ever know that?  Judge her by the looks of her?  Hmmm?  Bit unfair don’t you think?

And a bit of a problem don’t you think?  And why would he bring home a loosey goosey?  I’m saying this tongue and cheek.  Anyhow, this just demonstrates how vested parents are with their children and how they cannot help themselves, absolutely cannot help themselves when it comes to their children in turning into uber judgemental and over bearing parents.  The kind you said you’d never become.  Or want to be.

Arrrrgh!

Well, there you have it folks.  A sharp shooting pain up my left rear, sciatica nerve related.  My heel hurts on that side.  Started yesterday.  Oh yeah, I also now have a painful knee…can’t tell you how limpy I am today.  Limped around here and there.  Last night was the worst.  I stood on my left foot and it just felt like a bad twisted muscle in my butt and leg and I needed someone to pop me back into place.  I literally winced and yipped and yiked.  It hurt something awful.  Today I tried to stretch it and that made it worst.  I would feel ok, walk and then all of a sudden a sharp sudden shooting pain.  Nothing I did seemed to prevent it.  No stretches, some exacerbated it.

On another note, the cabinets are here, about 2 days late but what can you do.  They look nice and I just realized the enormity of the job.  We not only have to clean but then unpack.  I’ve been working on the rooms a little each night.  So far it’s taken me the longest to just go through all the paperwork we’ve accumulated from 2006.  I can’t begin to tell you how much crap and documents we have.  And this is even after I’ve filed all our stuff away.  We have a legal file cabinet I insisted on getting about a year into our marriage.  I put all our documents in there.  Major purchase receipts, warranties, transcripts, mortgage docs, tax docs, car stuff.  I am organized but I’ve really let things slide.  I used to account for every single piece of receipt for any major purchase and checkbook and etc.  I can’t believe how far I’ve fallen.

I have statements here and there.  I’ve produced a large black garbage bag of shred.  On top of which there was a second garbage bag of just garbage.  It felt great to see the garbage go.  So refreshing.

I just wished I had this nesting urge like 6 weeks ago, when I was more able bodied.  Not all sciatica nerved out like I am.

So going through the paperwork and shred, I’ve found a 50 verizon rebate check, plus another 208 dollar check from a health reimbursement.  This just chaps my hide.  I hate disorganization precisely for the fact that it does waste money, time and you tend to lose valuable things and checks, such as this.  I’m calling up my insurance company to see if they’ll reissue the check.  I think they will.  On one hand, it’s an indication that I’m not following my money as closely as I should, which is also another indication that we’re not living paycheck to paycheck or reimbursement to reimbursement.  The bad news is we should be paying close attention to it.  That’s the whole point.  Waste not, want not.

Facebook Creepiness

So I’m talking to Taiwanese best buddy today.  She surprises me by saying, so how was lunch at Osteria.  It is a fabulous Italian restaurant in Palo Alto but there was no way she’d know that since I didn’t mention it, unless she happened to talk to my mister.  I asked, “how’d you know?!”  She laughed and said, “Your hubby posted on facebook how he was having lunch with his beautiful wife at Osteria.”  I hate facebook sometimes.  It freaked me out initially.  We were picking hardware at Restoration Hardware.  A store I do like.  I digress.  So sometimes I do hate facebook.
